Well our first 2012 Art Reception was a hit! The MLK Mural Project is up and wonderful - filled with many views of MLK and his life's achievements! It was good meeting Louis Delsarte, the main muralist, that so kind in bringing in a gilcee of the the MLK mural located at the MLK Museum on Auburn Ave.

As for me, I am still working on my site... I've got to finish it... it's so laborious. I have got to do it!

January 22^nd Reception from 2-4PM

The Defoor Centre is proud to announce the first show of 2012 celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life achievements known throughout the world in mural form. This group of artists will display their larger than life wall space pieces on a smaller scale.

The display will up for six weeks January 13 through February 29 2012 with a Sunday afternoon reception on January 22 from 2-4PM. This is a free event and families are welcomed.

Started by the City of the Atlanta in 2008, the mural project tells the story of Martin Luther King, Jr, by using the large visual format. The first exhibit started small with 70 artists on Edgewood Ave in Downtown Atlanta, across from the MLK museum to well over 200 today. Artist Louis Delsarte won the first contest and now he’s the manager along with artist, Cheryl D’Amato coordinating the show all year around.

Many artists from various backgrounds bring their talent and skill to explore Martin Luther King’s life and achievements, that are still carried on today in many ways unknown to the obvious. “At the Defoor Centre this will cover the entire inside of the building and that’s over 20K square feet, just think of the physical and emotional impact of the imagery”, states D’Amato with a smile.

As a juried show, participating artists are not yet known and will be announced in mid November.

About the Defoor Centre:

The Defoor Centre is located off Howell Mill Rd in Atlanta in the reviving Westside neighborhood, where a lot of local vendors that cater to the interior designers have been going to for years. The Centre has been a growing facility hosting major fundraisers to corporate meetings to private weddings all in house catering with a full bar. 100 years ago this place was a hospital for the soldiers fighting at the Battle of Peachtree Creek and to this day they are “still there.”

Buyers can choose from all levels of technique and variousmediums, from drawings to sculpture jewelry to paintings – traditional imageryto the abstract. So priced at these rock bottom prices you will get the deal ofthe year and you will be supporting the local arts.

Off The Wall was revisited in 2007 from art director, JillKettle’s days as an intern at New Visions Gallery in Buckhead where it was ahighlighted event. Bringing it back, gave local artists, a chance to show andsell and meet with others for a sense of community. Many Off The Wall artistsare picked for shows at the Defoor Centre and other local galleries as well asbuyers that became fans and friends. “Not only is this an art show but it’s atime to come together as one, share thoughts, views and laughs”, says Kettles.Trying to put on this show takes the whole year, gathering up artists, talkingto the media to the actual installation.

The Weekly Skirt Report - Bake Sale for Criminal Records Hey there folks,

Got a few things going on this weekend - The Atlanta Artists Center -Photography Salon will be presenting their wonderful photos, from traditional to manipulated images will be on display the entire month of October. Come out on Sunday 10/2 from 2-4PM.

Next up is the cattle call of artists from the local scene - OFF THE WALL - November 13th from 2-4PM - where artists will be displaying their work for rock bottom prices. Three rooms priced at $200 $400 and $600 - from all levels of work and age.

Then starting in January 2012 we will have a Martin Luther King, JR Mural show… it will be so beautiful one big image all over the center.

NOW FOR THE BIG EVENT: Bake What Your Mama Gave You!

Criminal Records, a local record store, located in the small community of Little Five Points of Atlanta GA, is in need of money. And what else to do? Hold a bake sale! So with the help of the public, bands, and others we are setting up a bake sale on 10/27 at Smith’s Olde Bar during their benefit show to help raise money as well as see what kind of sweets we as a city can bake! WITH A JURIED EXHIBIT, “A PHOTOGRAPHIC CELEBRATION”

AS A PART OF ATLANTA CELEBFRATES PHOTOGRAPHY

RECEPTION: SUNDAY OCTOBER 2^ND FROM 2-4PM AT THE DEFOOR CENTRE

AtlantaGA – For the second year, the AtlantaArtistsCenter’s Photography Salon, will be celebrating with the annual juried show, “A Photographic Celebration,” featuring 50 works by AAC members. This will be in conjunction with the city-wide Atlanta Celebrates Photography 2011, which focuses on traditional photographic imagery, but also encompasses digital computer manipulation techniques. This exhibit will run the month of October, with a reception on Sunday October 2^nd from 2-4PM. It’s free to the public with refreshments and a cash bar.

The juror for the show was Mark Karelson, co-owner, Mason Murer Gallery, in Atlanta, GA. “Mark is known in the domestic and European art communities for his ability to showcase many art forms, including photography, and he works tirelessly to give back to the communities where he enjoys a presence. We were honored to have him jury the show,” said H. Gay Allen, Chairman for the show.

A cash and ribbon award will be given during the reception for Best of Show; and ribbons will be presented as Awards of Excellence for the following categories: Technical Excellence, Artistic Excellence, Photographic Technique, and Pushing the Digital Envelope.

The AAC Photography Salon is “an informal, photographic artists’ education, discussion and support group of those who use one, or all, forms of photography as their means of artistic expression.” See:http://www.atlantaartistscenter.org/

We have several things going on at the gallery on 8/25 at 7PM at the Defoor Centre. So it's free and the bar will be open... if you weren't able to make to the June show... this is your LAST TIME...

THEN OCT 2 the AAC Photography Saloon - will be up for their show - wonderful traditional to the oddly manipulated will be on display... So be on the look out... for that

This time: Love and Happiness

What makes your art form happy. Is the prepping, the journey or the end result? Is it the stops or the u-turns? I usually have a basic idea - and then I start to paint to see how it goes. I tend to stay on the path and not sway, but what I have a hard time doing is - coloring outside the lines. I've been doing the same type of thing for years. I've not sold, but everyone seems to like it.

So I try now and then - like my picture postings did I do it? I try to get looser then I feel bad that I'm not doing what I was doing before how that affects me.

Guilty? Ugh, yes.

How will I know it? Does this bother you too? How do you work through it? I feel like if I just push myself through the paint and the image, then I will get it done. If I walk away from it, then I lose my connection... I try to draw it out from time to time or use paper as my canvas, to not waste but that too is another animal.

So how do you push and pull your way through?

Best of-s this week:

PASTRY SHOP: Douceur de France on Powder Springs Rd near the square. I'd see this place from the street a few blocks over but never made it... so we spent $35 bucks there... ouch! Very good all over. Just don't go in the AM for it's WAY too busy. The owner is a small french woman and had a great cafe/pastry shop. I call it a chick joint. For the men in there looked miserable. I guess it's safe to say: Paybacks are mofos?

Burger's Market -score again. I swear the Marietta Square one - is SO HARD to park there. UGH.

Went to REVive Coffee - one to see an artist's work, Chris Hamer - which my husband loved two to have a cold mocha frappe - yummmm and get the person's name to put my name in the hat for showing. It was a roasters paradise...

BBQ: Mr. D's over by South Cobb High School - small little place and their sauce is sweet and tangy. This was the 2nd time there, I had Brunswick Stew - very good and hubby had pulled pork. Again, good.

Then I tried my app: ALL RECIPES: Dinner Spinner to look for something different for dinner. All Recipes it's called. I found Macaroni Meatball Soup. Well I don't know why I didn't see the MEATBALL part or I would've bought frozen ones... anyways, I improvised. I had to add some more tomato sauce and then I turned it into a casserole: put cheese and croutons on top.

YUMMY. The Creme Brulee... eh.... well I've done better.

I didn't eat it but it was runny.... so in it goes to the freezer. Then I took Sugar Free choc. pudding and graham crackers - crumbled them and put them mini-bundt cake molds, and then lite whipped topping... that's for tonight.

As we glide into this fall season, let's see what we can do new.

Hubby and I have been going some where new and basically free for the past for weeks. The High - was basically free because we have a membership courtesy of his job. Then we went to the Falcons Football practice... it was clear across the city and beyond but fun to go to... that was free.

Our buddy, Giovanni's had a big write up in the Marietta Daily Journal about 2 weeks ago, I hope that helped him out. It also ran in their neighbor newspapers - yayayayay *throws confetti*

WHY?

I think it's a self esteem issue. If you haven't thought about it - art is a dying art form. We are in the middle of being washed away. Especially with music. But I will stick with visual art first.

First we (artists) are being asked to draw out our lives in caves then we have to carve out walls in Egypt and while in Rome we are building for the gods for their approval. During the days of Jesus we HAVE TO DRAW judgement day you know why not - it's complicated. THEN in England we are trying to apease the royalty with finally we get over to the states and we are squashed. What is it with you all (the public)? You all want song and dance and something pretty to look at but you want it for free? Hmmmm no.

Then after a few minutes of pondering. Ok sure fine we get a show a big round of clapping maybe a new home and hot chick. But we are still unhappy. GOSH we are miserable. Drunk, surly, talk to ourselves.... can't have a relationship with anyone because we are married to our work.

Are we married to our work? That's another question.I think we are married - and we want to happy but we can't because so much is being asked of ourselves. We try to be shocking, we get frowned upon we do traditional and we get "why did you do this?"

So back to the quote: Warhol meant something by this. He meant it in a plastic way (using his own language) but whenever you say something this profound even in a joking way you meant something by it.

I think he meant to say: We are not pawns. We are not free-loaders unless you make us that way. Unless we depend on it because you couldn't pay me. We are your history book, bible illustrators, thought provokers, diary entries, room decorators, hotel lobby entrances, and main street square shockers. Are we worth it? Sure everyone is. One would pay for an lady of the night right? You'd have to or she bring her boss in the photo. Everything blows up and your life is a country song. Lost girl, lost truck and lost dog?

So back to our dying friend art: Poor thing, did we see it coming yes. did we try to do something - yeah sorta - not enough or we wouldn't be talking about this.

So, I say pay up or give up but I won't give up cause no one can put a price on my artistic journey. No one.

It’s a doozie. I think personally he was honest and thinking that a lot of artists don’t sell and at the end of the day they just want people to love them. It’s just that simple. And the only way they can achieve that is through giving it away. Which is sad because it’s not want we want, but some times it’s what we get in life that makes us stronger. So, I will continue dissect Warhol. That’s just my first thought of the day…

Atlanta GA – The Defoor Centre gets ready for another Off
The Wall show – this time we are upping the prices to $200, $400 and $600 for
artists to sell at. The week long show starts on November 13, 2011 with
afternoon party and comes down Friday November 18^th. This is a great
time to check out the local artists, see what’s been going on in their studios,
and maybe buy a unique gift this year for the Holidays. Various artists, whether it been on paper or
on metal or sculpture or pottery this is a great chance to see the goods of
city’s most creative people.

“Over the past five years, since the first show, we’ve
changed it up a bit but always staying in touch with the basics, good work at
unheard of prices. It’s important for the non-art crowds to see more than
what’s going on and not been in a festival mode this is a gallery show,”
explains art director Jill Kettles. It was played upon her time at New Visions
Gallery at the TULA art center in Buckhead that gave her idea to create her own
to carry on the legacy. As a large gallery the place is able to house a lot of
work and it shows it various set ups as each room is different in its wall
space.

Many well known and well-liked artists have been a part of
this; Karina Keri-Matuszak who
was voted best emerging artist from Creative Loafing readers, in 2008. Longtime
veteran gallery and marketing guru Sharron Ragan, whimsical mixed media Mark
Collins, and cutting edge photographer Matthew White have all been there from
day one. This is what makes the sales good, they’ve all sold and they are a
continuing force to drive more artists to this show. Sometimes just being
around them gives you the inspiration to do more.

So come out with your artistic minds in hand and your check
book in tow to be prepared to buy some fabulous work, cause it will be gone
before you can blink.

Brick Wall or Styrofoam?

So last week I got to talking about Andy Warhol and I stated that he must've been onto to something with his quote: and he was: there was more to it: "An artist is someone who produces things that people don't need to have - the part left out was: but that he - for some reason - thinks it would be a good idea to give them."

SO that's the question is good to give away or swap or just wait til it sells. SO now what did he mean. Do we give away when it's just been dusted? Do we give it away because it's your LEAST like piece? Or do you let them pick. Well see what kind of fire we can kick up...

I see what Andy is saying here as we have a need for validation of praise. Even if it's bad. We can take it. And sometimes there's times that I want - would INVITE folks to say I hate it or It's bad, or it sucks. I really would. Of course they'd have to MEAN IT. We need something to carry on we are humans even if we claim we don't. But is that important? It's such a brouhaha in our selves... such an inner fight.

So when someone says I don't really need your painting does that mean, I don't like it? Or does it mean they want it for free. Wel your time and materials are for free. And that's when the emotion needs to stop. It's not business. So, how do you do it?

This brings up the question of well if reverse the situation. Would they like to do something they do for free? I don't know like a surgery ... prolly not. The Weekly Skirt Report - What He Said...

He being Andy Warhol:

An artist is somebody who produces things that people don't need to have. --- Andy Warhol

..... So what does he mean by this: I will be working on more a in-depth version go a little deeper than the subjective-ness of it. I feel that Andy was trying say that people aren't gonna buy unless they want to. It's not bread on the table or clothes on your back. It's quite simple yet actually can be involved. Does this mean Warhol was being snide to his fellow peers and colleagues - maybe he was like that alot - was he saying the truth and no one wanted to hear it? Or did they just brush it up as they didn't hear him. Maybe they rolled their eyes at him. BUT he was onto something.

Does this effect the artist? Sure it does.

So I will drop ideas and opinions that I get and research this further and keep you posted.

And another idea: in the near future: why do we create and why do we feel like our time is up at times. How does one get through it? Is it the process or the end result?

So, just some food for thought.

As for Faves - this past weekend I hit up the Bugers Market in Marietta - I've decided it's gonna be really hard for me to get up to the Marietta Square in time for the good stuff so I will go again, but it's gonna be really hard to do the 9AM thing. So, then Hubby and I went to the GA State Farmers Market. That was sad. I don't know if it's busier earlier in the day or if the summer is not good for it? I didn't see a GA Farm there. I saw a lot of Latin American stands but it was really empty and said. I feel bad for the state of GA has a lot to offer. Maybe I hit it on the wrong time of the year. My next market I want to go to is one in Powder Springs and one in East Point. They both look good.

Then we hit up Giovanni's again. This is the best italian restaurant by far and wide. It's off of the East-West Connector in Austell GA, a few miles from home and tad outta the way but WAY WORTH IT.

Then on Sunday I hit up the gym, the Wal-Mart and the Kroger - ALL neighbor faves but not locally owned. I was on the hunt for a staple gun DO YOU BELIEVE W-M didn't have one?

Amazing I know.

Fave book: ugh, still reading the Andy Warhol book still reading the PR book and NOW I wanna read Toelle book The Power of Now. I've been meaning to. THEN I wanna...

I have to add this: Fave APP: yeah the MOMA has a cool app they have audio tours and I have to say it's soooo cool. I haven't found another gallery or museum that matches them. SO tell me is there another one out there? I love it. Which leads me to another thing that I can't talk about right now. So...

Then my other new thing is Google+ - it's so cool to be apart of something that has potential to be so good. Cross my typing fingers. It's awfully quiet around there...

Back to the studio: Worked on some paintings this weekend. I think my series of (muffled voice) will have to take a back seat for a while. Gotta work the kinks out, I got to thinking after getting very far on one - will this work? Does the story convey through it? Would any one GET IT? I dunno. This is the hard part of being an artist. I know it sounds horrible but I mean I thought WHO BUY IT? (sad I know) then I was questioned am I an artist or a craftsman? Well after a day or so of thinking of it, talking to myself and throwing a fit, I think I am both. Even though I've donated a few pieces over the years I've never considered me selling my work. I mean it's somewhere else, but I didn't get the money. I get that some will think I have but in the clear sense of selling art - I haven't. Am I wrong? Am I playing the part of a the cynical artist?

These are the questions at hand folks. I mean does it really matter? Hence my drinking problem. I mean really is this way so many artists are surly?

UGH - great and now what do I do with all these health mags?

Favorite - Time:

Didn't make it to the Farmers Market on the Square nor the DK Gallery to re-check out the work but I will. The Marietta Square is great but not on a holiday weekend... when everyone figures out that it's there and well they've finally made it once this summer.

Restaurant: mmmm... Brusters was good. Yeah a vanilla ice cream blast with cookie dough pieces - mmm yeah... too bad they can't do yogurt ones.

Store: hmmm didn't really go into any indy stores: does Hancock Fabrics work? I got a steal of a deal on canvas - to finally cover almost all but one of the stretchers that sweet Cindy Davis gave me! YAY! So little has been spent on prepping but so much on creating..

Product: I guess this again, was a non-indy type of weekend. Sigh.

Book: Still reading the PR book although I think I can say I'm done. I reading alot of the same stuff online. Andy Warhol's book is always a good read just to read something different than the paper.

Music: Mainly listened to classical while in the studio. So, pick and choose the brooding mind of sonatas and minuettes... or waltz... whatever you should want.

So now what. The best thing to do is keep painting what've been painting til I screw it up. I am not sure when this series will come about but I am sure something will. All I can do is keep drinking... water...

The Weekly - Mini- Skirt 6/27/2011

What happened to this month? It was SLOW. And we still have about 4 days left - I think I know why - Huly is coming - it won't last long but it's a doozie. Huly is a joke between me and a client's manager. It started off a mistake in a email - so we went with it. A two week or three week period where everything is soupy, smoggy and well it folds into itself. So it's coming just wait - to compare it to anything it would fall under sometimes like Mardi Gras with out all the drinking and debauchery. Then July sets in, and we just tend to lay there. Too hot for words.

Ok - art is coming slow to me lately. Got a deadline of August to get a series up and on canvas. I don't wanna give it away so I sit with duct tape on my mouth. Again.

*muffled voice*

The Defoor Centre is open folks: go and get a good lunch, watch the art on the walls dance, and scare a ghost or two there. It's very easy - just look at the air and say boo.

This week's faves:

Marietta Farmer's Market: went up there - checked it out - it was good, ok and maybe I outta get up there earlier than 11AM - so far the Bibb Lettuce was great, the tomatoes -hmmm - I am a freak for good ones and they are ok.

But I got some lip balm from a local homemade maker - in GA - called Rinse - bath and body - products - everything smelled so good so I got some balm. It's 100% made with squalane and apricot kennel oils. I like it - with exception - it's very googey - I get nervous about how googey it is, incase it bleeds all over my purse. Then label is thin - the ink rubs right off - so I've had to be very careful in how I handled it so I could read off of it to tell you all. But the link to the site is: www.rinsesoap.com

So going to the Square was fun. I walked around went into the DK Gallery - they will have a folks art showing this week: Various ones... gotta go back. Went into some cute little stores - some bakers - and then opted out for pizza slices at the Marietta Pizza... hmmmm good stuff.

Then on our way home from dinner - we stopped by Giovannis' Italian Restaurant. He will be talked about soon in the paper in Marietta... so look out... YAY! He's got a great spread of food and it's so much better than the others. He's located off Austell Rd where the BJS was! He's on Facebook - just search it.

So, I've decided to re - read the Andy Warhol book - the PR book is good. Just boring. Will continue to read but not talk about. Let's see what seeps through of it and what doesn't.

The Weekly Skirt Report -

Today's word: Faith

Faith can be taken all kinds of ways. Faith in our lives that something will go well, to be a good thing, or something that will get you through the hard times in order to keep you from going insane. So as we wander through life we have to apply faith to everything - so why are some so weary of it? I know I don't trust myself at all with math and I have to lean on people to help me out. But I have faith in that it will work out somehow.
So I've been watching my horoscope on Yahoo as of late and it's been really good promises of all kinds of things... bright future that requires shades and positive thinking - etc etc etc. So when will this beacon of light come? I have no clue. BUT we have to be faithful in the outcome. I hate this cause it requires patience. I have it but sometimes it runs thin. So now what?
We sit and wait.

FOOD:
Viva Mexico - we went on Saturday night, it's a small Mexican place that we sometimes go to. So we went and I had a yummy chicken taco salad and a great dark Mexican beer.

BOOK CLUB: nothing folks - gotta find something read. I MIGHT re-read the Andy Warhol - Philosphy of - A to B and Back Again. That was a great read....

WAX-ING: I've been hooked on Lady Gaga's "You and I" - and Gimme Shelter - The Rolling Stones version - then always back to Beth Hart... I am a strange music person. http://youtu.be/GJtq6OmD-_Y

RECIPES: I made a recipe from the AJC here and it was Chicken with Blueberry Salsa and you know it was good. Once I find it again, I will post it. The salsa was basically blueberries, onion, lemon juice and cilantro I think.

The Weekly Skirt Report

We have our sundresses on and we are ready for the show! The summer artists are up at the Defoor Centre for the Journeys show opening party for 6/19 from 2-4PM. This will be a great display of some of the area's best visual artists even one from Nashville! The work look awesome in the galleries so we are tickled pink. So come out after church, brunch or if you are on your way to somewhere.

Ike Stubblefield will be on hand to entertain us on the piano - he's a marvelous player....

LOCAL TIME:
No eating places this time... sorr-eeeee....

My cool local find: PLATO'S CLOSET - a slighty used consignment shop. WOW - we just happened to be browsing around Goodwill's for frames and I looked over and saw the sign. I really have been wanting to go in one of these. SO, I bought some really cool shoes - see photo. They are a purple - a great patent shiny shoe w a gold heel - so cool. They are slightly small but leather stretches in my book. Guess how much I paid for them: $10. Yeah I rock bargains.
There are several locations and I went to the one in Alpharetta. So, go and take a look around. Doesn't matter how old you are.

The Weekly Skirt Report

So I am early...I've got a few things that I NEED TO SHARE... As my pal, Deb from San Fran would say, "I wanna share!"

Ok - The only finger wagging I am doing this week is - Come to the Journey's show at the Defoor Centre on 6/19 from 2-4PM - if you are in the Atlanta area. End of begging.

I am in the middle of a period in the year - where I have to figure it out for next at the gallery. So, here I go - I need a few good artists, man or woman, to fill up a HUGE gallery room - The Forum - will need 75 to 100 paintings. It all depends on their sizes. I need big, bold, colors, nothing sexual, violent or political.
So if you are interested and you think you've got what it takes... email me here.

FAVES for the weekend:
hmmmmm went to BURGERS MARKET - in Marietta - off of Canton Rd. - BEST TOMATOES EVER. So I got those, peaches, broccoli, cukes, and NE HI grape soda... Father in Law used to have it in his sweet tea, thought, well let's try it. LO and Behold. It worked. I saw a basket and I thought that would make a GREAT Lampshade... must go back.

I might sound like Martha Stewart for the moment but I only mean well:
Following recipes were tested this weekend:

From Country Living June Issue: Two of them actually
Corn on the Grill - I did the BBQ corn under the broiler...
Squash on the Half Shell - this was easy. You don't have to use the Ricotta cheese you can use feta.

And from June's Issue of Whole Living - Cherries on Toast - I used Melba Toast - cut calories WAY DOWN

Oh they were yummy...

Went to Pappadeaux's on Sat PM: oh it was BUSY... I guess the TV show Treme is bringing the New Orleans cusine up a notch. I got the Shrimp Ettouffe... it was YUMMY... and some Reisling Wine...I died. I wanted to take home a dessert but it was too late I was puffed.

THEN I made Peach Ice Cream cause last week's landed on the kitchen floor... so I pureed the fruit instead... wise idea...

Ok I had bought a dress last February at a 2nd Hand store, it was Sea Foam Green. I want to wear it on June 19th.... well I've been channeling my inner Molly Ringwald circa Pretty in Pink. So I've dyed the dress Black. Well turns out that RIT dye don't work on poly-ester. SO, went to Joann's - and they suggested to spray it. So I got 2 cans of Simply Spray. So far so good. Probably need 2 more cans. But man I never thought about it. See photos above... (looks eerie huh?)

So cross your fingers that it all goes black.

Now for Turntable mania: Got off of my Rolling Stones kick. So now I started to listen to The Jayhawks this morning but got interrupted by friend calling. So, we will go with that... Any cd, any song... any time - that's the kind of band they were.

Dog Ears: yeah I know still on the dang PR book BUT I've been reading a lot of
magazines...

So what do know: One: Burger's has the BEST tomatoes - two: peach ice cream is better in the bowl than on the floor and three: clementine and carrot juice rules.

Hey there Folks, did you get your hems right? Zippers are mo-fos right?

Well my tip for the day is: Communicate - I don't care if you are touted the GREAT Communicator - you've run into situations where they just don't listen or think.
I've been known to skip it but there are times as artists that we need to slow down and think before we run off and do something. As a publicist and an art director at a gallery there are times when one just has to throw hands up and say oh well.
When you don't communicate - then you are making assumptions.
Consider this: 1-Ask - what could we say no? or we could say yes. It all depends. 2-asking helps me know that I am doing my job - whether right or wrong. I am needed. I am not just an ornament.
The funny thing is nowadays - our society isn't thinking we are doing. SO I beg you to think, before you act, speak and just ask.

LOCAL PICKS: Restaurant - THE VARSITY - yeah the greasiest spot in Atlanta. I had a BLT - their tomatoes were great! I love a place where the tomatoes are ripe and perfect. No green things. If I wanted green I would've ordered green right?

Local store: hmmm didn't go into any this weekend. OH WAIT I DID. oh that's a restaurant. We went to Fellini's Pizza on Howell Mill Rd. Got their fabu salad which just their pizza toppings on lettuce but their salad dressing... I have no clue what it is. I LOVE IT.

I went to the gallery this weekend twice. I traded a wonderful piece with former local artist, Alicia Araya who does this really interesting technique called a EnviroTek bath. Which takes paints, crayons, chalks, etc and changes their colors, and it seals like glass. So I've hung in my bedroom... it's so romantic. It's called House Note...there's a slight glare on it but it was hard not to get one. So thanks Alicia. Hope you like your roses.

Turntable: Been listening to ALOT of Stones, The Rolling Stones. So, anything by them right now.

Book: UGH the same on. I am a SLOW reader... so give me a break.

On the Boob Tube: hmmm we watched 5 epis of Treme. Love it - especially when the chef throws a drink on the food critic... What a rebel.

The Hemline is all screwed up! Rip it out!

TOPIC of the day: Save Face Keep Your Grace.
Why do I bring this up? There are several factors. One I encountered a media person that didn't pay attention to her email and read the whole thing. So when she said Take me off your list I proceeded to call her - trying to figure out what I did wrong. After talking to and calming her down, she apologized to me about it. This is the old saying of Don't Assume Anything for it makes an A$$ out of you and me. Right?
The way to attack or approach this and not make it worse with attitude is ask why.
So I hope folks out there will remember - read the fine print look at the notes and hear me out.

Dyed a dress this weekend, hmmm I might take a black paint brush to it... not working booo...

SO This Week's Faves:

THE POOL: this weekend is the official kick off for the pool opening - ALWAYS went Memorial Weekend. It was a kids ritual. So if you don't belong to one - go pay 5 bucks and use the city ones that are in need of your funds and the family is in need of a break.

EATS: hmmmm stay home and grill this weekend. You and your neighbors can have a grill fight. *MY Grill is better than yours...* Go to your farmers markets, kick back and breathe. Thinking of making homemade ice cream. just cause.

ON THE BOOB-TUBE: saw finale of HOUSE - was it a dream? and why does he drive SUCH a bad looking car - I mean he's a doctor!

DOG EARS AND CAT FUR: Been reading alot of blogs and articles on PR and how to get the word out there. Somewhere. Just need folks to know. SO no Danielle Steel books for me. Learning alot though.

MUZAK: Been going back to the vaults and listening to The Rolling Stones. Gimme Shelter has a nice ring to it.

I will start off with some serious stuff first:

Recently I was asked to write a reference letter for a friend of mine. I was honored for she is a truly good jewler. I feel like when writing an open letter to anyone receiving it I tend to think like a CD music reviewer in how I approach it. It's hard to figure what to say but I will give you three tips:
1-intro to create a visual of that person - if they are a musician - try to create a setting of where you would find them or how it sounds...
2-where you met-online, working together, thru a friend..etc
3-why you should pay attention - what makes them so special and stand out. Try to use actual facts to back up your love..
Then round up with I hope you see this in them too...
If you wear many hats, put the best one on as you sign off, with what kind of position you are to say who that person you wrote about is - What makes you the right person to talk about them.
Easy Peasy!

Local Shoe Repair: Terrell Mill Rd Shoe Repair Shop - AWESOME work. If you have shoes that need to be fixed, freshen-up or polished, go there... I got three pairs of heels, done for $30 - now I am not walking on nails. Shoe repair is a dying art... so to keep it going, go to your nearest specialized shoe repair man... they will love you for it.

TURN THE BEAT AROUND: I've been listening to old stuff lately. So my new-ish CD is Beth Hart my California and the Crowelogy from The Black Crowes.

Sometimes you have to go to Marshalls and such… just have to: So as we were looking for a shade for a lamp I made poor hubby endured 3 hours of the hunt. We were in Hiram - (don’t roll your eyes) we went into Kirkland’s on the main drag – you know I thought it was going to be hoity-toity but it was reasonable. Found the shade – bought the lamp to get it then we went to LOWE’S – found a plethora of shades… what is my problem? I should’ve started there first. Much closer to home. Oh well, he got a Cold Stone Creamery shake out of it…

The Defoor Centre’s summer season opens up with four well established Southeastern artists that will blow your tiaras off your head. Vickie Martin, Tina Jones Ciranni, Laura Parker and Lisa Stevens will present recent works along with some familiar pieces. This wide selection of work will up from June 10th to August 31st with a Sunday soiree on June 19 from 2-4PM. The event is free and open to the public and kid friendly. JUST ADDED: musician Ike Stubblefield will be at the piano in the Forum Gallery.

Vickie Martin-Forum Gallery
A local-favorite whose work has been around the city’s best galleries, will be showing her complete collection of work. Rendered in paints, found objects and sometimes the use of salt – will give the images texture and depth. Vickie has found inspiration in all her surroundings. Her popular images of floating dresses and luminous moons will be a major focus of this showing located in the Forum Gallery.

BREAKING NEWS: For entertainment at this show will be Ike Stubblefield, a world known B-3 Hammond Organ player will transfer to the grand piano in the Forum gallery and bring his magical fingers to amaze us. Ike has been a fixture in the music scene for 40 years always maintaining the tradition of the B-3 sound. He started off at Motown Records where he played with some music greats in the 60’s. He’s been on tour with Eric Clapton, shared the stage Derek Trucks, and most recently played on some Cee Lo Green’s sessions. He will be releasing a new CD, come summer filled with jazz, R&B and rock sounds all coming from this jewel of a musician.

This is the first time in a long time that these artists have been shown together under one roof. Their work will tickle your mind and grab your eyes in wonder. One will speak to you!

About the Defoor Centre:
The Defoor Centre is located off Howell Mill Rd in Atlanta in the reviving Westside neighborhood, where a lot of local vendors that cater to the interior designers have been going to for years. The Centre has been a growing facility hosting major fundraisers to corporate meetings to private weddings all in house catering with a full bar. 100 years ago this place was a hospital for the soldiers fighting at the Battle of Peachtree Creek and to this day they are “still there.”

Featured Artists with a March 24 Reception

Atlanta, GA- The Rites of Spring Show will be in full bloom come March 21, on the first day of Spring, with a reception on March 24th from 7-9PM. The show will be up til May 31th. Formal hours of the Defoor are T-F 10AM to 5PM with Saturday-Monday as appointment only. This collection of big bold colors will give the gallery a boost from the winter blues.

In the Forum gallery Andrea Allegrone is disciplined graduate from the Rhode Island School of Design that rebelled with her organic and abstract works. These works are fluid, transparent and inspiring. Her illustration background gives her the bone structure for her loosely depicted paintings. She has shown all over the world, and had her works in many publications.

In the Lobby, mixed medium artist, Alicia Araya brings a unique process of everyday art supplies and a secret epoxy to give it a glass feeling. The imagery changes color and size while sealing it shut – so to speak. Alicia has been a fixture in the local arts scene and she will be moving this spring so this is will be one of her last showings.

In the Rhombus, Paola Seguel Plateo brings her Picasso inspired work that jumps off the walls for the viewer. Her Chilean heritage shows through with her wonderful imagery and color.

In the Gatsby, Colleen Hackett, will present her images of femininity to convey emotion. Her sheer and fluid markings are watery towards the subject matter. She works in various amounts of mediums and in 3- D works.

The Defoor Centre is located off Howell Mill Rd in Atlanta in the reviving Westside neighborhood, where a lot of local vendors that cater to the interior designers have been going to for years. The Defoor Centre has been a growing facility hosting major fundraisers to corporate meetings to private weddings all in house catering with a full bar. 100 years ago this place was a hospital for the soldiers fighting at the Battle of Peachtree Creek and to this day they are “still there.”

2011 is to be a great year at the DeFoor Centre Galleries – I say plural cause there are more than just one. The following schedule has some holes in it so we will be filling in and announcing as we go. Receptions will be announced during the year – subject to change.

The Girly Show is back for the summer – this year with Vicki Martin as the featured artist in the Forum Room. New artists are always the focus of the Defoor and we always welcome back old friends. We will have photographers, sculpture and mixed media along with traditional paintings. Bright colors, big images are the rave this year so come on out to our openings, to get engaged with the work and the artists.

JOHN TINDEL BRINGS HIS IMAGINARY BEINGS TO THE DEFOOR CENTRE

WORKS THAT WILL INTRIGUE THROUGH THE END OF THE YEAR

Atlanta GA – The Defoor Centre will end the year in the Forum Gallery with local favorite John Tindel and his paintings. The collection will be up from November 7 –through December 31st with an opening reception on November 11 from 7PM to 9:30PM.
The event is free and all ages are welcome.

This exhibit aptly titled, Imaginary Beings is a collection of art based off the book by Luis Borges of the same title. Tindel explores the creatures dreamed by philosophers and writers. The show will also feature collaborative pieces with artists Sam Parker, Alex Feliciano and Michi Meko.

John Tindel was born and raised in the South has been a fixture on the Atlanta art scene since graduating University of South Alabama in 1999. His keen eye on design and color exposes the content of the imagery. He’s always working on a new view or angle to convey to the viewer pushing the envelope. With his design and marketing background Tindel has had success with fashion merchandising that was featured at Bloomingdale’s.

The AAC Show is still running - through the end of the month. This is a great collection of black n whites and color with various treatments traditional and electic.

John Tindel will be in the Forum Gallery starting 11-8 through the end of the year. We will have a 11/11 party for his collection of unique styles of work.

Yeah I've been slacking on this, but as we look at fall - I think sweaters, cool night air and look towards the holidays.

This Fall -
AAC: Their photographers will be setting up for the month of October in the smaller galleries at the Defoor - annoucement of party will be up this week.

3 Femmes -Rebecca Salcedo,Katherine Timer Hagan, and Amy Pochyla will be showing starting in November along with John Tindal through the holiday season.

CALLING ATLANTA ARTISTS: 4th ANNUAL OFF THE WALL: 1-2-3
September 9 2010 at the Defoor Centre

Atlanta GA- Defoor Centre continues its tradition of the Off The Wall show on September 9 2010 at 7PM with an opening around the large facility showing off local Atlanta artists and their wonderful works! Choose from many pieces varying in mediums, sizes, and get this selling at these following prices $100-$200-$300 – so be apart of this crazy idea!

Here’s the plan layout:
1- Go through your studios find pieces that fit those three price ranges get them ready for showing – meaning wires on paintings, sculptures on stands, etc. ONLY ONE PIECE PER PRICE! You can show up to three pieces or you can just sell one in one price range.

Yes there is a gallery split 60/40 and tax will be applied to the sales.

MAKE YOUR OWN PRICE TAG CARD-please include your name-title of work-medium and what price point it is, so we can separate them in groups. You maybe bring all the cards and brochures you want to pass out.

2- Bring your work, display cards, and signed contract in by September 3rd (late comers are fine and if you can’t bring them in anytime sooner – game day is fine just but by 7PM is the cut off time)

Hands On Atlanta is a non-profit organization that helps individuals, families and corporate and community groups find flexible volunteer opportunities at more than 400 service organizations and schools.

Hands On Atlanta, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a special event June 19, at the DeFoor Centre. To commemorate the occasion, Hands On Atlanta is asking artists to contribute artwork inspired by the handprint in its logo. There are no rules about the art – it could be a painting, sculpture etc. The artwork will be displayed at the event and used in an auction to raise funds for Hands On Atlanta.

For the artist -- two tickets the event and a receipt for a tax deductible contribution. The event includes a birthday cake decorating contest from 2 – 5 and a gala birthday bash that starts at 7. Participating artists can come to the entire event or any portion.

On May 16 at 1:30PM the Defoor Centre will be hosting a show for Ray Harbour and Shijun Munns for their unique pieces of work:

Soul Visions will be a month long show for local Atlanta artists: Ray Harbour and Shijun Munns - two very innovative artists that take viewers on their life journey through their native cultures.

Healing of Mother Earth, humanitarian efforts, community building, and social concerns are integral to Ray’s offering as an artist. She is committed to participating in the great journey of healing and transformation. Through art and writing, Ray discovers her inner truths and revelations about the outer world. She shares her journey, fears, wounds, struggles, joys, and learnings in a stream of consciousness style through images and words.

Shijun cares about everything that could touch off an old days feelings; ancient poetry with implied meaning, ancient pottery with rough and simple design, flying faeries on the ancient silk road. Indeed, Shijun seems to look back into space-time while her paintings spring forward into our time to bring us images of deep and profound souls glimmering in soft, golden light.

So come spend this special Sunday afternoon at the Defoor Centre for an unforgettable journey!

IN SPRING: BRIAN TAYLOR LIGHTS UP THE FORUM
Translated Landscapes
Shorter College Professor and His Paintings Up Starting March 21st

Atlanta GA- Spring has sprung at the DeFoor Centre with Brian Taylor’s abstracts of color, form and texture that spring from nature. His work will be up from March 21st to April 30th. This will be brief but a solid collection of what this wonderful artist has been up to.
Brian is the Chair of the Art Department at Shorter College in Rome GA as well as he teaching, speaking and finds time in exhibiting around the world. A graduate of University of Memphis he has believed in the basics of painting; light, color and form. His own works evolves from nature and how it moves, develops and almost sings with such titles of paintings, “Clearing Through the Wisteria” or “The Wind and Light within a Hayfield” bring many other images to the viewer, perhaps literary. Taylor states: "I believe that writers become writers when reading is not enough and artists become artists when observing is not enough.”
“He suggests that the lack of defined edges in his work is the purposeful strangeness necessary to distance oneself and to be intimate at the same time, keeping "the edges between the real and unreal blurred." It is by letting go of a learned sense of being in control that we can reach higher planes of understanding in relation to both nature and art. “- taken from his artist statement Translated Landscapes, written by Denise Carvalho

Someone I was talking to asked me what a press release was and how about to write one. I wish I could get a dollar for every time I explained but alas I am such a good hearted person and shared my version of one. So here I sit in the sandbox....

By basic definition it's basically to bring light to an event or a product for both the media and a targeted audience to be aware of.

So, to start off with, I always try to come up with a title that will be eye catching, quirky but simple. Serious is good and always welcomed just be careful in that sometimes the somber can be a quick turn off. If you mix in hope or faith in it - it creates better imagery.

The first paragraph should read as who what when where why and how. Remember those invitations:

Anyways, keep in mind you need to get in all the vital information in that first paragraph. For example:

The MOMA is proud to present Andy Warhol: His Work from The Factory Years starting January 1st 2010 through April 1st 2010 in the modern art wing of the museum located on the east side of the building. The MOMA was chosen by his estate to unveil this unique grouping of work .... you get the picture. A public reception will be held on February 14th with a cash bar and appetizers.

The second paragraph should explain who/what is being annouced: if it's Andy Warhol: it will be a brief bio on him. And then maybe a 3rd paragraph to talk about the Factory years etc etc etc.

Then the closing parapgrah should be something to tie it all together, by using the mission statement for your cause, the event or the company. Then state where it's located and anything else, that might be useful for your media folks.

Attach a press photo which could be an image from the art catalog, or a logo or a person in charge photo...etc etc. So folks can be all set to make sure they have everything and if they don't they will get back to you.

IN SPRING: Shorter College Faculty member Brian Taylor - whose multi-media 2-D paintings are emotive and passionate. His use of brush strokes and color are intense and vibrant.

Folk artist: Al Simpson will be in the bar/cafe area with his quirky images that will remind you of Howard Finster.

MAY ONLY: Ray Harbour and Corrina Sephora - Ray is a local favorite at the DeFoor Centre for a long time with her finger paintings depicting raw human emotion as well as colorful abstracts. THE ESCAPE FROM PANTY DRAWER ISLAND

This the story of The Escape From Panty Drawer Island. This is for entertainment purposes and also for those who have ever been in that mission or hunt for something and gave up and then they appeared. Sometimes I feel that God is playing with me, by taking things out and hiding them, then once I have walked away from it, places that item back to reassure me to have faith.
So hence this story.

I went home to VA for Christmas 2 years ago, surprised my folks cause we had told them we weren’t coming-lack of funds and Steed had to work during the whole break. So I snuck up there early in the morning and 9AM my folks were surprised to see me on the day after Christmas.

The next day or so we had fun, catching up, running along with them on errands and having a “late Christmas” with my brother’s family like have done for years. So, my older brother gave me a VISA gift card for $100. So, my mom and I went shopping at Tyson’s Corner and went to Nordstrom first. I used to work there, so all of my customer service standards are held there. If you give me lip service I tell you this, “well at Nordstrom this would never happen.” So we went to the shoe dept, the clothing dept and well the lingerie dept. I love pretty –let’s use the word unmentionables… as my grandfather would’ve said. But I am a cheapskate so, I don’t spend much on them. I find things at all the lower end retail stores so to spend $40 bucks on 2 panties is a BIG deal. So I picked out two, one from Betsey Johnsen and one from Honeydew. Ok. There you go, that’s the purchase.

Now I love these unmentionables and I have to plan to wear them cause if I wear them to the gym, I look stupid with ruffles and yoga pants right? (Hear the gym chatter: “OMG she’s either got some major cellulite or she’s wearing a diaper!”) So, a lot of times I will wear them on the days I don’t go to the gym. I have to really just wear them with Jeans…. But I love them anyways. I started to wash them very carefully…then gave in put them in a lingerie bag-so they aren’t ruined.

Well, about March of this year, I went to look for them, in my Panty Drawer where it all pops out all over the place when you open it cause there are many pairs that you have to stuff it all back in, hold it down with one hand and push it closed with the other. So, I combed through it, I dumped it on the bed, I looked below in the drawers underneath, I looked in the back of the drawer. Nothing, nowhere to be seen. UGH!

I went to the closet and COMBED through the dirty clothes, I dumped it out on the floor. I went through each bag that was in there. Nothing. I went through my shoe boxes. Nothing. Ok onto the bathroom – nothing. I went down stairs to the washer and dryer I pulled out the wet clothes, the dry clothes , the iron pile and the dirty ones there in line to get clean. NOTHING.

All this is happening, and I have to get to work. So I have checked my art studio, I have checked my gym bag, even combed through Steed’s car and drawers THINKING it got hidden. Black ruffled unmentionables do blend in with other black clothes. SO I am racking my brain on the way to work.

I think ok, when was the last time I wore them, usually oddly enough I could you tell this, but this time I couldn’t. So, I knew if I asked Steed, he would ask me, “how could you lose something that was on you?” The look of suspicion, the raised eyebrow and the silent treatment would follow. So, I couldn’t say anything to him. I didn’t want a divorce, based on the fact I couldn’t find my black ruffled unmentionables that were supposed to be ON ME, and now I couldn’t find them.

Back home, after work, act cool Jill act cool. I slide in my searches, over the next week or so, as if I am cleaning out and reorganizing. I go through the sheets to make sure NOTHING got caught in the pockets of the sheets, I go through my father in law’s sheets as I wash them to make they weren’t there. This goes on for another week. Rinse and repeat. Steed in the meantime is unemployed, trying to figure it out and it’s hard-the appeals go wrong, our cars break down, I have art gallery stress through the ceiling, etc… stress is hitting the fan and all I am worried about is a pair of panties.

SO finally I think I will check with the gym. I got up to the front desk, WHISPER my lost item. I am thinking I lost them while changing and someone picked them up and is wearing them today or they were put in the lost and found pile… You know, Betsy Johnsen is pricy so… gotta think that way. So, I tell the girls, and they giggle. (Great now I am known, as “she’s the one who can’t find her panties!”) They try to help me. No results. So as I walk out I stop a girl, who works there, to ask. She says if you don’t know when you lost them they were thrown out. UGH! Ok so a few more days go by and it’s April something. I have to tell Steed that I can’t find my panties.

It’s a Weds night, my wonderful maid had been by to clean and I LOVE COMING home to a clean house….it’s great. SO as you can imagine, I am tired, of a lot of things by now. Everything from this dang hunt, to money, to the weather to everything. But I haven’t been able to think straight about those things cause of the stupid ruffled black unmentionables that cost me 20.00! BUT the main thing is I hate to lose things. I can count one hand things I have lost. I thought well, it’s time to start on the hand.

So, I get upstairs to change out of my work clothes, I look down on top of a huge pile of magazines, papers, files and such. And guess what’s there: MY RUFFLED BLACK BETSEY JOHNSEN PANTIES THAT COST ME $25! TAAAAAAAAA DDAAAAAAAAAH!

OH I was happy, relieved, elated… and I turned to Steed, and said, I have been trying to find these for months! He looked at me, with the raised eyebrow and asked “how could you lose something that was supposed to on you?” I giggled and told him the WHOLE story- everything even down to the fact I had to look in his drawers. He just rolled his eyes and said, “well now you have found them. And let’s eat dinner.”

So the whole reason for the tale of Escape from Panty Drawer Island, was for me to have something so stupid to worry about while other things that would’ve giving me a heartattack and so I wouldn’t worry so things would work out the way they need to do. And in fact they have… we’ve have had some rough patches but things have always been ok.

I know those panties for a fact weren’t there when I left. And the maid would’ve put them on the dresser not on the floor on a pile of mags and files. So you tell me, is it God, fate or dumb luck?

I think it’s a little of all three-hope you had a laugh.

WOW it's been a while since I have blogged. UGH. Sorry... So... here's my rant for the week...

Okay I am going to be completely honest and say I am totally burned out – I get this way at this time of year and I just usually shut down till about Thanksgiving . Then I am in craft overdrive till about one hour till Christmas has started.

We all have been there, tired of trying, exhausted of creating, burnt out on everyone and everything. All we want to do is go back to bed, pour a drink (a really strong one!) or cut a HUGE piece of cheesecake. At times we feel cheated because we are pulled in so many ways, we don’t have time for ourselves in fact we find ourselves snapping and snorting at our friends and family.
As of late, you can count how many people of the world have died, the summer air is different this year, the Braves aren’t doing well, and we are all on edge. Something is happening, it’s really almost nerve racking. I have found myself having more arguments with people that I love than ever. Yelling at the phone, actually now, I dismantle it so I can sleep in on Saturdays. I wish I knew the Italian mob, I would send them to all the 1-800#s, that I have been calling me and “say hello to my little friend!”

So you know what!? Don the Dunce hat and give yourself a timeout!

Go walk about the neighborhood – don’t forget your drink- it will give you the image of I am social, I really am… (Just kidding about that, but seriously sits outside).

If you have a front porch big enough to sit on, set up camp and “look” busy but wave and smile at the dog walkers, speed walkers and kid walkers. It will get you interacting with people-“what do you do?” “Well, I paint (or whatever you do), give them your business card or invite them into your garage studio. (“Don’t mind the mess!”)

Have a backyard grill off: A couple of weekends ago about four of us, all were grilling… I pointed at my neighbor across our yards and said, “My grill is better than your grill!” He said, “You’re on!” Then we went back to our worlds and made sure we weren’t burning our houses down. Then last night, I stunk it all up with fish. That’s okay I had a cheap margarita in hand, I had no worries at that second.

It’s been a hard few months in our land, here, but I feel that things are gonna be okay. I get frustrated with our checkbook, get angry with the struggle to create and then I just give up. My creative juices are dried up, my eyes are sore from crying, my ears are ringing at night. Don’t even ask me about painting… right now, I have no qualms in poking folks in the eye with a paintbrush. But I am gonna say that even though this past week can be labeled the week from hell, it was the weekend in purgatory.

I went to see an old friend, who now cuts hair, she is learning, did a wonderful job in calming my nerves and the hubby came home from a long day, and I worked on some small projects at home. Felt like I HAD TO PAINT but it would’ve been forced. Not good. So putting about the house, doing minimal things will lead up to the big project or a breakthrough of sorts in getting over our crazed minds. It’s a good thing, as Martha Stewart says.

But last night, we lay in bed, trying to watch TV and our signal was so bad, that I called twice to the cable company. So we turned it off, and tuned into the internet radio-went to KGSR in Austin, TX and clicked on “Listen Now” they were airing E-Town. E-Town is something I know of cause of my day job as a music publicist but its set on a stage and broadcasted all over. They had Loretta Lynn on there, and she is a hoot… She has everything you know under the sun but you know she doesn’t need it. She can live off of the bare necessities of life, friends and family.

So we felt like modern radio days of the 1930’s only if we could have the price of living back then now. It was relaxing and took your eyes off the ball for a while. I thought why haven’t done this before? So we hope to get that in rotation a couple of times of week.

Take your eye off the ball for a while, only if you aren’t a baseball player then just ask to sit out a game.

When you were growing up there was one thing you wanted - A big birthday party with lots of your friends there, right? As you grew up you, maybe started to plan a wedding, you wanted everyone to come - eh? And as you are growing up, you go to a funeral, one that is widely attended, and you think to yourself, "when I die I hope I have a lot of people come to my funeral." This is what I thought and still think as I grow older. Will anyone come to my funeral? Will I be remembered for something?
Steed's cousin died suddenly a few years back and the entire town of Ringgold showed up, the wake was 5 hours long. Everyone came out to see his family, his friends, and to say good bye to someone who died tragically. When my grandfather died, all of my grandmothers' friends, drove real slow in their big cars to the funeral to support their friend's loss even though he had been very sick for a long time.

When you hear on the news, that no one came to the funeral for someone, it's sad we think. And then we see something as grandiose as the Jackson Memorial we are grossed out but the enormous turnout. Or are we?

Remember folks, who still can, when Elvis died, when Kurt Cobain or John Lennon died, even Princess Diana died all at some level in their careers, gone with minutes and then had a termendous reception of fans and media to give their support. Today's media is larger - biggger-more available then ever before. So, think if this was back in the 1970's it wouldn't been "so big". From a media stand point. Remember John Jr, back at JFK's funeral saluting his father?

Remember the streets lined in Memphis for Elvis, Remember the turn out at the Dakota building for John Lennon. Think this: When Michael Jackson died where were you? I unfortunately was standing in front Coke products. (Maybe I should have been down a few feet at the Pepsi bottles) I was in the car on Howell Mill Rd when I heard about Kurt Cobain. Where you were when 911 happened? Me, I was on I-75 across from Dave and Busters (a game/entertainment center-maybe a sign that this wasn't a fun and game moment.)

I am hearing a lot of men of the cloth (pastors/minsters) complaining that this was "mass confusion + secular messianism." Well, that's funny coming from a mega-church minister. Mass confusion on what? Someone that reached out millions, probably more than these ministers will ever know? Secular Messianism-HUH?

HUH? Oy vey folks! This is where I get angry-ask my mom she'll tell you.

If you didn't like his music, never bought his music, like me, although I "like" it and grew up with it, I never was a huge fan of his. BUT I respected his talents, applauded his motivation and I appreciated it. Just like Led Zepplin, never liked them, but in the honest words of Al Kooper, "I got them."

SO that aside, hear me out. So back to the men of the cloth remarks. Ok Jesus tells us to love, honor and have faith with God to be a better person. All religions come from that kind of center. I don't care what you are... even atheisism has its center of widsom let's call it. It's just some folks got bored and branched out and now we have a huge collection of religions.

When I hear these men of the cloth remarks, I hear envy, jealousy, greed, lust-see where I am going with this? Seven Dealy Sins! These men should be acknowledging the fact that MJ (as well all other musicians, actors, dancers) was trying get people to escape on a journey that would let them forget their troubles. Move people, make them sing a long, cry, laugh, and think. That's all.

Ever heard of "we are gonna rock your world?"

And what are these mega-churches doing, I don't know-but I have to been to one, and to me it's way too much focus on "HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN GET IN HERE?" And to me, that's mass confusion + secular messianism!

Think about how this one man reached out to folks all over the world, more so than, anyone on this earth in our current lifetime. He shared his talents with the world from age 5, he changed alot with the entertainment business as well as creative process. He was misunderstood, alot. But wasn't Elvis, John Lennon, Kurt Cobain? Even Marilyn Monroe and Martin Luther King for that matter. Yeah it takes a certain ego to get up on a stage and move people with simple songs with simple words, but it takes a man to share the emotion of love to all.

I honestly believe MJ was definitely misunderstood and we as a society put alot of pressure on him to be who he was. We don't know the whole story, we never will, but we do know is that he brought a certain, love -joy-happiness-to all of us. No matter if you are a fan or not.

Go read the words to Jackson's song, Man in the Mirror. That's his song like Dylan's Blowin the Wind or John Lennon's Imagine or Joe South's Walk a Mile in My Shoes or Johnny Cash's Man in Black (the song where he talks about why he wore the color), listen to Billy Joe Shaver's Live Forever - read the words go find another song that you can move and build upon it.

So back to the funeral attendence, does it matter? Not really in the grand scheme of things but some times it makes you want to reach out and love someone even better knowing that it will make a difference in your world and theirs! So you will be remembered whether they show up at your funeral or not-as one that loved you no matter what.

Ok this week has been a whirlwind and I haven't decided if it's been good or bad - so we are going with Good. Just for luck.

I have been asking myself as of late, what I am doing - why am I not selling-not just canvas but PRINT. And I came to realize my site http://www.scribblesstudios.com/ sucks. So, I am in the midst of putting something new together and figuring it out... don't know when it will officially get done but I'm working on it. I will be working on my Artfire.com store and Etsy.com store to make them look better maybe I will sell?

I dunno.. .it's hard to take-I spend all my life creating and creating... and nothing? I am NOT looking for a pity party I merely looking for a solution. Any ideas? hmmmm --------------

Hey I know it's late, but see hubby drove all the way from Chicago to see me and he's driving back... I know I know... I will be able to explain later... anyways, trying to get everything done with out doing anything...

Before I start my usual links and such. I am not sure here, hmm, went to a couple of art openings these past few days. I don't want to complain BUT I am just gonna say. If you are a gallery, and you're in the deep south, keep your doors closed! I basically collapsed of heat exhaustion. I am not kidding! (ask my buddy in WI who I was chatting with on Twitter)

Then do away the name tag stickers for artists to wear too. Being an artist, you are supposed to mysterious, daring and unknowing. Name tag stickers are for conventions or speed dating events.

AND be a little more generous with water especially if it's 95 degrees outside and 101 inside the gallery. I really hate to whine but I feel that this really was a health issue for not just tiny little me but for everyone in that hot room. If the place was having AC problems, tell folks and apologize for the inconvience.

So anyways, I am always trying to find the good in people and situations, but I feel that I had to voice my feelings here.

This will be the start of summer I know most say today is, but I give you permission to delay. Maybe you need a few more minutes: extra time to get in the mood.

THE GIRLY WHIRLY TWIRLY SHOW!
Four Atlanta Women and their Work Only
Start Summer with a Splash – June 11 2009 at 7:30PM

The DeFoor Centre is pleased as punch to present The Girly Whirly Twirly Show – all women, girls and chicks – works from Martha Elisa Bojorquez, Sharron Ragan, Drew Dumaine, and Christine Hibbert. The show will begin June 11 2008 at 7:30PM to 9:30PM to meet the four artists and see their work. The bar and café will be open for serving drinks and appetizers. Their work will be up til August 15 for the rest of summer.

The show title came from art director Jill Kettles, and her cat, Isabella’s nick name, Girly Whirly Twirly. “She is a pretty cat and she has that aura around her that makes you call her, Girly Whirly Twirly,” Jill giggles over the long frilly name. This and an all male artist shows are the bookends of the DeFoor Centre Summer. All the women involved are strong, feminine and fun. All mediums will be there-painting, photography and sculpture – for this is a chance to display that all formats are appealing to women in the arts. “I wanted to state that women can do anything in the arts and not be shoved into a corner.”

The Forum- a native of Mexico, Martha Elisa moved here with her husband and brought along her amazing colors and shapes to create impressions that stay in your mind. When meeting her at her house and studio, the paintings, the drawings and the encaustics are all just overwhelming to the viewer. She has been in shows around the world, and has won various awards over the years. Her technique of using her emotions and use of color bring the images to another level. She is a true colorist in the tradition of art.

The Rhombus Room – Sharron Ragan, another local Atlanta artist who is also is a colorist completely takes on the theme of being a woman and applies it to the canvas. She has brought it on, these are especially made, for this show and she is dressed to impress. Her ability to work with the abstract and the obvious blending them and then sometimes separating them is remarkable.

The Gatsby Room – Christine Hibbert who resides in Savannah, is a painter that loves to explore the past by scouring thrift shops to get inspired. She likes to layer the images with book texts, maps and pictures with slivers showing to expose the paintings past. She explores culture focusing on marriage, religion and sexuality. These abstracts images depict the struggles, the journey and humanistic views using organic forms. “I push the viewer to look closer at my work while addressing issues of human connection through the hidden use and layering of these specific texts”, she concludes.

In the Bar and Café-Drew Dumaine- a New Orleans photographer with an eye for the unusual. “I found her on Etsy.com and I immediately was drawn to her window images of shops along New Orleans’ streets.” Her works will include the non obvious of the city and definite gems that go unnoticed. A graduate of LSU, she is currently living and working in Baton Rouge.

So break out the party dress and shoes to come out for this fun show!

Please read!
I am trying to gather a prayer vigil for my husband, Steed Kettles on Tuesday May 5 at 1PM Eastern Time. He will be defending himself in hopes to appeal and overturn the ruling on his unemployment rights. If you are within ear shot of us you know what is going on.
Steed got fired from his long standing job because he told the truth about an incident on the stand during a lawsuit case early this year. This provoked his firing and an onslaught of lies being told by the company to avoid paying any monies. This is illegal, this is wrong, ethically and morally – wrongful termination. Now without going into further details, this company has a track record a mile long, for this kind of behavior so since the company lost the mentioned case, we are hoping that this will shine through to the Dept of Labor here in GA to get the attention of the right person to over rule it so Steed can have a piece of mind knowing he did the right thing that day.
Steed has been working since he was 12. This money is HIS! The disappointing economy has drained him emotionally, mentally and physically for looking for a job is really hard. The feeling of unworthiness and helplessness that he feels is unbearable. Men are wired to be the protectors, the providers and breadwinners in our families, communities and our country. It’s an emotional characteristic that gets broken when they lose jobs etc.
To bring him support, guidance and love, I would like to ask everyone we know and love as well those we haven’t met to say a prayer, send good thoughts and vibes even light a candle in his honor to provide him the most to get through this. This is extremely important, for the ripple effect causes everyone hurt and suffering all from someone’s greed, dishonesty and pride.
So please take this seriously and to heart that we all can get through this wretched times through our spirituality in whatever form it is or isn’t.

After reading the article in Creative Loafing, called “Going Going”by Scott Henry, I got the feeling he was in fear of the Atlanta arts community disappearing. I really beg to differ.

I understand that ticket sales are down, and galleries have been forced to re think their plans but it doesn’t mean a dry up of our beloved scene. Maybe this severe change will reframe (pardon the pun) our visions.

When I first got here, back in 1993 there wasn’t anything here, the High, Faye Gold, Sandler-Hudson, and Nexus Comptemporary Art Center which is now the just the Comtemporary. There was the High of course, Alliance Theater, and the Fox Theater.

One of the reasons why I picked Atlanta, was because of the funky, bohemian, quirky art scene. Cities like Richmond, Asheville, Charleston and Nashville hadn’t started to flourish as of yet and maybe hadn’t if Atlanta hadn’t shown them the way.

So after a few years out of the art scene and I came back a couple of years ago, I found out the character that Atlanta once had was gone. The small community had gotten almost too big and I couldn’t find anyone. It was almost as if everyone that I knew had left town. Slowly I found folks but there wasn’t any of the charm. Even the music scene had gone despondent. I am wondering if Atlanta had gotten too big too soon.

To me, the city had a lot handed to us, the Olympics, the growth, the suburbs and back to downtown again. All for what, “Number One Southern City in Growth?” Ugh. No.
For once we are faced with something… something so big it’s small.

So what does a city like Atlanta do? A bunch of us creative souls need to think outside the box now. Maybe get more involved in our neighborhoods, communities and churches to explore our artistic sides with our friends. Life is not what it used to be now, and money doesn’t have to go to a swanky gallery and drink the swanky wine to get a sale and be the IT artist. All it takes is a house or a social hall or an Elk’s Lodge to hang out and share our creativity. Maybe those old garden clubs were onto something. Try imitating the old Paris salons and have a gallery party at your house.

So I say, rubbish to the Creative Loafing article and I think we as the surviving artists whom are going to be the victims, need to raise our own bars to create a new scene and when the economy comes around, then we will be ready to expand.

Oh and how about some media coverage on the local arts scene than covering something NYC or DC. WHO CARES! They have their own writers covering them.

Casey Olson will be having an artist reception for her paintings at the Defoor Centre on Thursday 2-12 at 7PM.

The Rites Of Spring show is nearing... opening on March 19th at7:30PM.

In May-The Atlanta Chapter of the Surface Design Association will have their month long show with many different fiber artists- including Leisa Rich, Martha Andreatos and Gray Griffith. These are unique pieces to show. Reception is TBA... probably that first Sunday in May.

In June-THE GIRLY WHIRLY TWIRLY SHOW will be up for the summer starting June 11th. This will be a great collection of all female artists from various backgrounds and mediums. So, mark your calendars!

Third Time is Gonna Be the Charm!

Atlanta, GA- For the third year, the DeFoor Centre is going to host the OFF THE WALL show, this time it’s going to be three rooms, three prices and guess what- it will be a longer showing! Starting Friday, Oct 23rd with an opening reception and the work will stay up til Nov 3rd that’s 12 days! So what’s the scoop?

This year all the main three galleries will be open for artists to show their work off for three different prices. The Rhombus Room, the smallest, will be open for artists to sell a piece for $100, The Gatsby Room, will be open for $200, and The Forum, the big daddy, will be open for larger pieces and sell for $300! This will widen your chances of selling your work. And guess what else? You can choose what room you want or you can use all three or just one. I will though, have to approve the work for the Forum, due to the nature of the room, which is used for the centre’s events and gatherings.

The idea came to art director, Jill Kettles, while driving to the grocery store day after the 200 show, “I was thinking what could I do to make it better, easier, and bigger!? It needs to be better for the artists, easier for the buyers, and bigger so that the public will want to come.” Again, there is no entry fee or application fee. We will ask for the work, to stay up for the week, even if you sell. If you are a jeweler or small ceramics, we will place them in cabinets for display and safe keeping. The work will need to be in by that Friday Oct 23rd AM. I will again, ask folks to make display cards, bring their stands, and have it ready to come- OFF THE WALL!

The Defoor Gallery is located on Defoor Avenue just off Howell Mill Rd. in the newly refurbished neighborhood. A lot of interior decorators work in the area and there are a lot fabric, furniture and lighting vendors that are located nearby as well. Atlanta Ghosthunters came by on Jan 16 - the spent about 4 hours exploring - with EVPS - EMFs and just plain human sense. We don't know exactly WHAT they found because they are going to reveal it on the radio very soon. We saw some stuff on cameras and heard some strange stuff.
